Our Boutique Inn

Built for the Discerning Traveler Desiring a Boutique, Historic, and Elevated Charleston Experience

Constructed in 1798, this grand Charleston Single House brings history, beauty, and comfort to the forefront of your stay. The Nicholas stands on a prominent place in Harleston Village. Named after the Harleston family, one of Charleston’s original families, the land surrounding The Nicholas was home to America’s first golf course, Harleston Green.

Our History

The original builder of The Nicholas was Henry Mockenfuss, a German immigrant and prolific builder in downtown Charleston. Born in 1766, Mockenfuss lived two doors down the street. In 1818 Nicholas Cobia purchased the home for $3,000. After Mr. Cobia’s passing, the house was passed to his wife Ann, then to nephew Henry Cobia. During the early 1900’s, the house was owned by former Charleston Mayor William Schirmir, after which it was converted to a boarding house, doubling the size by adding the rear third story and abutting carriage house. During World War II, many of Charleston’s large homes were turned into boarding houses for ship builders at the Navy Yard.

The Nicholas is an example of a Federal Style Charleston Single House, which means it is only one room wide. This was done for ventilation via plenty of windows allowing for a good cross breeze. Piazzas were built on the South and West sides of the house to face the commonly prevailing winds.

In 2023, Trouvaille Collection embarked upon a journey to renovate, revamp, and restore The Nicholas into the premier boutique hotel it once was. Trouvaille’s mandate was clear, make The Nicholas a stunning example of Charlestonian grace by adding modern conveniences while preserving the historic architectural design, built-ins, and accents that make this property an architectural “lucky find.” Trouvaille Collection is pleased to share a combination of luxury and history, a place where old-world elegance meets contemporary excellence.
